The carotid arteries are present in the neck and supply blood to the brain. Carotid artery stenting is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat carotid artery disease. The technique involves the insertion of a slender metal-mesh tube (carotid stent) through a small incision. The carotid stent expands inside a carotid artery to increase blood flow in areas blocked by plaque. Globally, 90% of carotid surgeries are performed by vascular surgeons.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: ev3, Gore Medical, InspireMD, Optimed and Terumo

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “Currently, carotid artery stenting is used in the treatment of selected high-risk symptomatic carotid artery stenosis. The procedure is an MI method. Many physicians are trying to make the procedure safe, which will lead to its broader application for various CVDs. Previously, treatment options for carotid artery stenosis involved the use of embolic protection devices that would capture embolic debris released during the endovascular procedures. Clinicians are now using both carotid stents and embolic protection devices to treat carotid artery stenosis. The outcomes have been satisfactory in some of the pilot studies and the procedural safety had significantly improved in patients.”

According to the report, the WHO reported in 2012 that about two billion people worldwide are expected to be aged 60 or above by 2050. As people age, they become susceptible to disorders associated with the heart such as coronary artery disease, carotid artery stenosis, myocardial infarction, PVD, and valvular heart disease. In addition, diseases such as obesity and diabetes are prevalent among the elderly population. Patterns and age-specific levels of hypertension, leading to various CVDs, vary among people and countries. Improved living conditions and the high quality of healthcare result in an increase in the number of hospital admissions and surgical procedures for the treatment of elderly people for various CVDs. However, medical treatments for various age-related diseases are expensive.Further, the report states that the high incidence of CVDs such as carotid artery stenosis, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and atherosclerosis propels the market growth.
