According to the report, use of automated blood culture systems will be a key driver for market growth. Blood culture tests that involve most of the microbiological studies are the second-most common procedure performed in medical settings to detect BSIs. Advanced automated systems such as BS's BacT/ALERT system, AccuMed International's ESP Culture system II, and Cepheid's GeneXpert system used for these tests help reduce the hands-on time, minimize infection detection time, and are easy to use. Conventional systems often used to provide false-positive results, which led to the development of advanced devices that have helped reduce false-positive results by 10%. These advanced systems have also reduced the duration of infection detection from 4-5 days to a 24-hour period for positive results.

Further, the report states that high cost of automated blood testing systems will be a challenge for the market. Automated blood culture test instruments are expensive, with real-time PCR instruments being costlier compared to other medical devices. BioRad's real-time PCR costs about $9,900, while that of Applied Biosystems is about $14,500. The cost of the systems has a negative impact on the market growth in developing countries compared to developed nations, as people cannot afford costly devices and tests. Though these instruments are one-time investment, their high cost prevents hospital authorities to purchase them. These hospitals use manual methods for blood culture testing.
