Global Biometrics Spending Market in the Government Sector 2015-2019

About biometrics spending in the government sector

Security of data and assets has been a key concern for enterprises, banks, government organizations, telecommunications, hospitals, as well as individuals. Keys, identity badges, and numeric keypads were previously being used to prevent unauthorised access. Technological advancements resulted in the introduction of two-factor authentication, wherein individuals could gain access to secure premises after being authenticated using two different components, such as hardware devices and numeric codes. However, hackers also could easily gain access to hardware devices and obtain numeric codes.

In 1999, biometrics was introduced to identify individual traits based on behavioural and physiological characteristics of individuals that could not be replicated easily. It includes voice recognition, palm geometry recognition, DNA identification, gait recognition, fingerprint matching, facial recognition, iris recognition, signature verification, and vein recognition. Also, biometrics are considered to be more reliable compared to physical devices and numeric codes. In addition, biometric traits cannot be lost or forgotten by an individual. Biometrics use verification and identification to authenticate an individual. Verification is a one-on-one process used to match biometric traits of an individual against a particular template. However, identification is a matching process where the biometric traits of an individual are matched against all templates in the database to determine an individual's identity.

Technavio's analysts forecast the global biometrics spending in the government sector to grow at a CAGR of 22.34% over the period 2014-2019.

    Press Release

Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Global Biometrics Spending Market in the Government Sector 2015-2019
Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the Global Biometric Spending in the Government Sector: 3M Cogent, BioEnable, Cross Match Technologies, NEC and Safran
Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Apple, Aware, Cardzme, CogniTEC, FaceFirst, Google, Hitachi, Iris ID, M2SYS, Nuance Communications and Suprema
Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “2D face recognition is widely accepted by many organizations. However, it loses its efficacy because of issues such as lighting conditions and changes in pose and expression, resulting in inaccurate identification. To overcome these issues, 3D face recognition was introduced. It uses information on geometric depth rather than color and texture, and is unaffected by lighting conditions. Hence, 3D facial recognition techniques are more accurate than 2D facial recognition. There has been an increase in the adoption of 3D facial recognition technology in the government, utilities, military, homeland security, retail, and BFSI sectors. The government sector uses 3D facial recognition technology for passport and visa programs.”
According to the report, biometric technologies such as fingerprint recognition, DNA identification, facial recognition, voice recognition, and iris recognition are used in the government sector, especially by law enforcement agencies, to identify criminals. The governments of several countries have increased their spending on biometric techniques and are also planning to deploy biometrics at airports because of increased terrorist threats. The implementation of biometric technologies at airports will enhance operational efficiency and security.
Further, the report states that high cost of biometric systems is a major challenge in the market.
