Global Automotive Variable Displacement Engine Market 2017-2021

Global Automotive Variable Displacement Engine Market 2017-2021

About Automotive Variable Displacement

Variable displacement is a technology used in ICEs by deactivating half the cylinders or a number of cylinders for increasing fuel efficiency at lower load conditions. Variable displacement technology is used in passenger cars and SUVs. It is known by other names such as active fuel management, multi-displacement engine, variable cylinder deactivation, and cylinder deactivation (DEAC).

Technavio’s analysts forecast the global automotive variable displacement market to grow at a CAGR of 27.09% during the period 2017-2021.

Press Release

Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Global Automotive Variable Displacement Market 2017-2021

Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global automotive variable displacement market: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Ford Motor, General Motors, Honda, and Volkswagen.

Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Daimler, Delphi, Eaton, and Toyota.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “The latest trend gaining momentum in the market is dynamic skip fire technology. Conventional DEAC is done by deactivating a selected number of cylinders or a selected set of cylinders to which the sensors and solenoid for controlling the oil pressure are connected. When the vehicle is moving at low load conditions, only those cylinders that are connected get deactivated. This method of deactivation makes the DEAC technology limited to a certain amount of displacement change, which is not flexible or dynamic.”

According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is increase in fuel economy at lower additional price. DEAC is a technology that is growing in high-performance vehicles because of the increasing need for fuel economy and improved performance. The increasing demand for luxury cars in APAC, in countries like China, Japan, and India, is a key factor in market growth. The rise in popularity of different types of automotive racing events around the world also helps to drive the global automotive variable displacement engine market.

Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is high cost of R&D. DEAC technology (DEAC) or variable displacement engines have been in existence in different forms for almost two decades. However, this technology continues to be primarily used for high-performance vehicles. Market penetration is very low when compared with other technologies, particularly in passenger cars.
