According to the report, advances in inertial measurement unit manufacturing technologies will be a key driver for market growth. Vendors such as InvenSense and STMicroelectronics have developed dies that can integrate both accelerometers and gyroscopes into closer packing sizes. Packaged combo sizes of sensors are now available at 10x10 mm² size, which is further expected to decrease with reducing die sizes. Now, IMUs are enhanced with sensor-fusion software in the application features such as automatic screen rotation, gesture recognition, step-counting, personal navigation, and free fall detection.

Further, the report states that power supply issues are expected to be a technical hurdle for inertial measurement unit manufacturers which will be a challenge for the market. Combo sensors like IMUs may be reduced in size, yet there is a noticeable drop in efficiency due to the need for scaling down the energy density in the batteries used, which adversely affects the battery life. This is a challenge for manufacturers as increasing efficiency while reducing battery size is expected to be quite expensive. This problem can however be dealt by introducing electronics that consume less power.
