Global Automotive Drum Brake Market 2017-2021
About Automotive Drum Brake
A drum brakesystem is composed of brake shoes, hydraulic wheel cylinders, springs, and a brake drum. In a vehicle, when a brake pedal is applied, the curved brake shoes with a friction material lining are forced against the inner surface of the rotating brake drum. Drum brakes are mostly equipped in heavy-duty and medium-duty commercial vehicles.
Technavio’s analysts forecast the global automotive drum brake market to grow at a CAGR of 3.74% during the period 2017-2021.

Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Global Automotive Drum Brake Market 2017-2021
Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global automotive drum brake market: Bosch, Aisin Seiki, and Continental.
Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: ATE, Cardone, Dorman Products, Federal-Mogul, and Akebono Brakes.
Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “The latest trend gaining momentum in the market is growing trend of low and zero copper eco-friction brake pad material to enhance the braking system. OEMs have been trying to enhance the braking systems of their vehicles to ensure the safety of passengers. For instance, OEMs such as Federal-Mogul has developed a brake pad with zero copper or low copper content. Even though copper is a vital ingredient in brake pad formulations, the presence of it in brake pads is being regulated as it is harmful to the environment. The concerned authorities are trying to gradually eliminate copper completely from the brake pads.”
According to the report, one of the major drivers for this market is improvement in the design and manufacturing techniques of drum brakes. In 2009, federal authorities in the US made the minimum stopping distance regulation for heavy tractors stricter. It led to the speculation that the truck industry will experience a shift from drum brakes to disc brakes as disc brakes provide better stopping capability. However, the speculation was proved wrong, and more than 90% of the heavy vehicles are still equipped with drum brakes. The reason being, OEMs started manufacturing drum brakes with improved designs and techniques to provide them with better stopping capability, which can meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is increase in the popularity of disc brakes in the passenger car segment is decreasing the demand for drum brakes. The global disc brake market is growing with the increasing sales of passenger cars. In terms of region, APAC is likely to show the largest sales volume for disc brakes by 202! (The Americas was the market leader in 2016). In India, most of the best-selling cars are equipped with drum brakes for the rear wheels and disc brakes for the front wheels. Disc brakes have several advantages over drum brakes. Disc brakes offer stable stopping even at high speed, provide linear operation, and are less prone to locking up.
