Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “One trend in market is AI technology for advanced robot programming. Global sales of industrial robots, including, material handling, welding, painting, assembling/disassembling, logistics, machine tending, foundry, and forging, increased to 263,853 units in 2015, a 15.12% increase compared with 2014. Countries like Germany, China, Japan, South Korea, and the US have adopted industrial robots on a large scale across many major industries. FANUC, a global leading industrial robot manufacturer, supplies industrial robots to assemble intricate goods in the electronics and semiconductor industry, notably Apple’s iPhone and provides industrial robots for major automotive vendors such as Volkswagen and Tesla. To augment the capacity of its industrial robots, the company collaborated with AI companies such as Nvidia in 2016. This collaboration will improve the robot’s graphic processing capabilities using deep-learning technology. This will be exploited to enable FANUC robots to recognize, process, and adapt to the external environment. By using neural networks, the robots can be empowered to analyze and teach itself as well as teach other robots new functions and capabilities within hours through self-captured videos.”

Core AI start-ups have attracted significant investment in recent times and are making great strides in innovation. Most AI start-ups specialize in developing AI for critical industrial processes, especially in major industries like oil and gas.
