Global Air-cushion Vehicle Market 2016-2020
About Air-cushion vehicles
Traditional air-cushion vehicles were used to transport equipment and troops from ships to beaches or war zones. However, with the changing demand, the air-cushion vehicle industry has witnessed the production of advanced landing crafts that can travel on several types of terrain like ice and sand. Also, the applications of air-cushion vehicles for commercial purposes like ferrying passengers and personal use (like for fishing, transport, and recreational) are rising.
Technavio’s analysts forecast the global air-cushion vehicles market to grow at a CAGR of 0.22% during the period 2016-2020.

Technavio Announces the Publication of its Research Report – Global Air-cushion Vehicles Market 2016-2020
Technavio recognizes the following companies as the key players in the global air-cushion vehicles market: Aerohod, AirLift Hovercraft, ALMAZ, Griffon Hoverwork, and Textron
Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Hovertechnics, Hovertrans Solutions, Neoteric Hovercraft, Feodosia Shipbuilding Company, The British Hovercraft Company, and Universal Hovercraft
Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “There are several new developments in the design of air-cushion vehicles to improve the maneuverability and to increase the payload. Successive developments have improved their carrying capacity to up to 60-75 tons of payloads. They are capable of transporting M-1 Abrams tank across the beach. These vehicles have also improved in terms of speed. Also, the air-cushion technology allows the vehicle to reach over 70% of the global coastline, while the conventional landing crafts could access only 15% of the coastline.”
According to the report, the growing emphasis on maritime security due to rising territorial water zone disputes and growing security concerns for sea trade across the world are driving the global air-cushion vehicle market. Currently, over 50,000 merchant ships carry out the majority of the global trade, which is likely to increase during the forecast period. However, these ships constantly face the threats from pirates on major trade routes across the Middle East and Africa regions like in the Suez Canal, Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, and the Arabian Sea. Therefore, to counter such pirate attacks and to safeguard the trading ships, many countries are investing highly in amphibian landing vessels like air-cushion vehicles.
Further, the report states that since air-cushions vehicles operate close to the shores, they are always prone to attacks from enemies. They are especially targeted by adversaries as they carry armed troops and ammunitions. These vessels also face increasing threats from fast inshore attack craft (FIAC) in littoral waters. FIAC's are a small, agile, and highly offensive crafts equipped with anti-ship missiles, guns, and torpedoes. FIAC have varying operating ranges, and the bigger the operating range of the FIAC is from the shore, the less potent the air-cushion vessels become. Even when operating in non-shallow waters, air-cushion vessels encounter threats from underwater vessels and even divers.
