This IDC study presents the five-year forecast for worldwide wearable computing devices (commonly referred to as wearables) by product category. This study is part of IDC's Continuous Intelligence Services (CIS) with respect to wearables. This IDC study presents the five-year forecast for worldwide wearable computing devices (commonly referred to as "wearables") by product category. The worldwide wearables market will reach a total of 45.7 million units in 2015. From there, the market will reach a total of 126.1 million units in 2019, resulting in a five-year CAGR of 45.1%.
Driving the market forward is increased emphasis on smart wearables (those devices that run third-party applications on them). Apple's Watch will inject new growth into smart wearables, which will bring greater attention to this segment of the market. Basic wearables (those devices that do not run third-party applications on them) will continue their ascent, resulting from continued interest in health and fitness trackers as well as more devices and experiences coming to market.
"Wearable computing is moving into its innovation stage," says Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC's Wearables program. "What had essentially started with simple health and fitness bracelets and bands is evolving to more sophisticated devices that augment the PC and smartphone. This leaves plenty of space for vendors, platforms, and developers to push the envelope while courting both consumers and enterprise users."Please Note: Extended description available upon request.
