This IDC study presents market shares in the relational database management systems (RDBMSs) software market for 2016, with three years of history, by vendor, region, and operating environment, and also represents the public cloud component of the revenue in the market. It includes analysis of market dynamics and vendor strategies and a comparison with last year's market share study. It also offers a comparative view of market growth in terms of as-reported and constant currency. "There are multiple threads running through the experience of this year that are significant to technology suppliers," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Data Management Software research at IDC. "In addition to the pressure to develop more and better technology improvements to support the RDBMS dimension of emerging 3rd Platform data challenges, there is also the move to the cloud, which not only demands that each supplier have a clear cloud strategy but also that each supplier should be prepared for the fact that, when big transitions such as this occur, there is always the possibility that users will reevaluate their current technology."
