"One question that comes up all the time is this: Will the new RDBMS products, especially those in the NewSQL category, or even nonrelational products (so-called NoSQL databases, which seem to better support agile development) eventually replace the existing incumbent products?" says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Database Management Software research at IDC. "What we have seen to date, and expect to continue to see, is that the established RDBMS products will continue to be the workhorses for their classic workloads: complex back-office transactional applications, large enterprise data warehouses, and long-standing, in-house-developed systems. The aforementioned emerging technologies will most likely predominate in newer workloads such as Web-based, customer-facing, or consumer applications; online games; social media; and the like."
