Worldwide Mobile Phone Forecast Update, 2017–2021: June 2017
This IDC study presents the five-year forecast for mobile phone shipments worldwide by device vendors. The worldwide mobile phone market will reach a total of 1,981.2 million unit shipments in 2017, up slightly 0.4% from the 1,972.6 million units shipped in 2016. From there, total mobile phone shipments will reach 1,992.5 million units worldwide, resulting in a CAGR of 0.2% for 2016–2021."This year will bring minimal growth to the total mobile phone market as we expect a continuing decrease in feature phone shipments offset by a mild 3% growth in smartphones," says Anthony Scarsella, research manager for IDC's Mobile Phones team. "Despite the expected slow total growth in 2017, the first quarter of 2017 did show positive signs in terms of smartphone growth. The traditional slow post-holiday quarter brought a healthy 3.4% growth compared with a -1% growth in the first quarter of 2016. We expect smartphone growth to improve above 3% at an average of just under 3.5% growth each year until 2021, the end of our forecast period."
