This IDC study presents the five-year forecast for mobile phone shipments worldwide by device vendors. The worldwide mobile phone market will reach a total of 1,950.8 million unit shipments in 2016, down 1.5% from the 1,980.8 million units shipped in 2015. From there, total mobile phone shipments will reach 2,075.7 million units worldwide, resulting in a CAGR of 1% from 2015 to 2020."Despite the slight 1.5% drop in volume in 2016, we expect that the worldwide mobile phone market will rebound nicely in 2017 and witness positive growth throughout the remainder of the forecast period," says Anthony Scarsella, research manager for IDC's Mobile Phones team. "We expect a 6.4% year-over–year increase for smartphones in 2017 compared with just a 3% increase in 2016. Leading the way will be low-cost affordable phablets that offer up enhanced multimedia capabilities and solid performance all while remaining affordable to consumers in a majority of markets."
