Worldwide Mobile Applications Forecast, 2018–2022
This IDC study provides a five-year forecast for the mobile applications market."The robustness of Apple's App Store and China's mobile services are the headline stories in 2017's $76 billion market, but just behind the headlines again are platform-centric models that are restructuring entire markets," said John Jackson, IDC's research vice president for Consumer Technology and Services. He continued, "Apple's self-contained structure and that of the small number of dominant consumer-facing platforms such as Alibaba and Tencent driving the Chinese market are common denominators. But revenue profiles will differ significantly, with subscriptions behind Apple's impressive growth versus more diverse revenue sources in China. We expect the influence of these platforms to extend across more markets and use cases as they become broader distribution channels for digital and, in some cases, physical services."
