Worldwide Enterprise Resource Management Applications Market Shares, 2015: Cloud Gaining Momentum and Industry-Specific Applications
This IDC study reviews the market for ERM software, which was flat in current dollars in 2015 at $51.4 billion, only a 0.2% increase over 2014's $51.3 billion. The flatness can be attributed to the stronger U.S. dollar compared with other currencies and the movement from on-premises products to subscription cloud applications. Movement to the cloud continues with more demand for public cloud offerings, intuitive user experiences, and quicker time to value. The dawn of the next-generation software applications is here; the consumerization of on-demand and social everything is quickly changing the way businesses operate. Add to it analytics, machine learning, and open source software, and the world becomes even larger for better applications. Right now, this is not yet impacting the on-premises market as it is still significant because medium-sized and large enterprises are surviving using their existing software. But as the next-generation software advances, more businesses will disrupt their on-premises systems and move to the cloud. Mickey North Rizza, program VP for Enterprise Applications, says, "ERM solutions have made significant progress toward the cloud. HCM is overwhelmingly the clear leader in cloud applications usage, with procurement in second place but at a slower rate of growth. The movement to cloud will continue as companies seek to be part of the new technology trends of analytics, data, machine learning, and open source software because it brings more agility and intuitive business processes and is extremely adaptable to a fast-changing business models. This push toward these technology traits is enhancing the movement of on-premises solutions to the cloud."
