Worldwide Datacenter Installation Census and Construction Forecast, 2017–2021
This IDC study provides our annual summary of data from IDC's semiannual Worldwide and U.S. Datacenter Deployment Model data product (see Worldwide and U.S. Datacenter Deployment Model and Spend Forecast, 2H16: 2012–2021, IDC #US42319517, February 2017). It provides a census of worldwide datacenters by size, sophistication, and ownership. It assesses the impact of changing industry business models as well as changing demand for systems of record, engagement, and insight on datacenter design, construction, and management. For larger organizations, the datacenter connotes the major, centralized, raised floor environment that houses the majority of IT systems. In service provider environments, datacenters are the "factories" for delivering new services to consumers and businesses. In today's world of cloud, mobile devices, and cognitive systems, effective datacenter planning and management are critical to business success. More details on spending associated with datacenter construction and datacenter design approaches can be found in the current Worldwide and U.S. Datacenter Deployment Model."In the world of digital transformation, Agile development requires agile IT, which requires agile datacenters. Our response to this need is a one-time shift in future datacenter construction and major rebuilds that will play out from 2016 to 2021." — Richard Villars, vice president, Datacenter and Cloud, Datacenter Trends and Strategies
