Shipments of hardcopy will decline in the next five years, but there are certainly opportunities to increase revenues and profits if OEMs and their channel partners focus more effectively on hardware areas such as color and the development of additional areas such as IT services. Those with balanced portfolios and differentiated strategies are best placed to take advantage of growth. However, many segments are commoditizing, and many brands have similar offerings, leading to stagnation with no clear differentiation between offerings, said Phil Sargeant, program director, IDC Imaging Hardware and Document Solutions.
