This IDC Flash provides an analysis of the proposed merger of Vocus Communications and M2 Group — two telecommunications providers with operations in both Australia and New Zealand. Hot on the heels of its recent merger with Amcom, Vocus is once more shopping around and its sights have settled on M2, owner of Dodo and Commander brands in Australia and New Zealand. The merger will result in Vocus becoming the #4 telco in Australia, with a market capitalisation of over A$3 billion. Right after the Vocus-M2 merger announcement, Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) signed a A$1-billion deal with TPG Telecom, wherein TPG will connect more than 3,000 VHA sites using dark fibre. As part of the deal, TPG will migrate its mobile users from the Optus network onto VHA's. Both deals illustrate the continued consolidation urgency among tier 2 and tier 3 telecom players in the saturated telecom market in Australia.
