This IDC Government Insights report outlines the different Smart City initiatives and solutions implemented in Indonesia in 2017 and 2018. Each Smart City solution addresses different challenges brought about by rapid urbanization. The key decision makers behind Smart City programs are national and local governments, where the national government announces Smart City initiatives to support the programs and local governments leverage the country initiatives to build smart solutions. Both governments have been doing enormous research to develop Smart Cities across Indonesia.The report covers the journey of Indonesia (both current and future) for the development of Smart City, which includes the process of updating and developing smart solutions, how each solution is addressing the core issues faced by cities, how effective each government initiative to support the Smart City program is, and what will be the future benefits of all executed smart solutions.The strategy of Indonesian Smart City is to make use of all available resources for the development of the Smart City and thus to reduce the investment cost. For example, to address the transportation issue, Jakarta city's government has made use of the wide acceptance of Google Map among citizens. The report also outlines the future scope of each Smart City solution. Combining technologies such as big data, IoT, and AI with the existing smart solutions will aid to provide advanced citizen services. Based on the initiatives and solutions mentioned in the report, IDC believes that Indonesia sets an interesting example for other governments in the region to leapfrog legacy technologies and implement effective Smart City initiatives to cope with the growth of its cities."IDC believes that through thorough strategic planning sessions and policies that focus on the relevance of evolving public sector digital imperatives in meeting mission-critical initiatives, Indonesian city governments will continually be clearer in their digital transformation outcomes, as well as have better bargaining power to obtain funding and resources for their plans," says Gerald Wang, Head, Asia/Pacific Public Sector, IDC Government Insights and IDC Health Insights.
