Perspective: A Primer for the "Connected" Products and Services Landscape of Manufacturing
This IDC Manufacturing Insights Perspective offers a concise explanation for the opportunities that "connected" products bring to the manufacturing industry so that manufacturers can develop a strategy for adopting connected products and services. The intent of this document is to clarify a number of terms that IDC Manufacturing Insights uses to explain and categorize the changes taking place as a result of connected products. Manufacturers can use this document as a reference while IDC Manufacturing Insights continues to develop and publish additional research on connected products and services. This document is also complemented by two additional studies:
IDC TechScape: Worldwide Manufacturing Connected Products Technologies, 2015 (April 2015) defines technologies and assesses the adoption of those technologies for connected products.
IDC PlanScape: Transforming Service Through Connected Products (June 2015) provides guidance for IT and non-IT leaders in manufacturing to justify investment in connected products for after-sales service transformation.
Together, manufacturers can use these three documents to navigate the connected products landscape, understand the different opportunities, and formulate and execute a strategy.
