Perspective: Energy Department — A Detailed Look at IT Spending, Key Contracts, and Trends

This IDC Government Insights Perspective is designed to provide readers with a detailed look at the Department of Energy (DOE), including the agency's many levels of information technology (IT) spending. This document covers how both mandatory and discretionary spending flow through the department and what impact this budgeting will have on IT planning and spending.

We use the current federal government fiscal year 2015 as the baseline for our discussions and look at how the Energy Department's budgeted IT funding for this time period is allocated for addressable markets (hardware, software, and IT services) and non-addressable markets (staff salaries, datacenter operations, space and equipment rental, and more).

We also examine:

  • How the IT spending focuses on specific systems and solutions at the Energy Department
  • What the major IT investment areas are across the department, especially on specific programs
  • Where the IT investments are assigned from an enterprise architecture (EA) standpoint

This document ends with a set of tables highlighting which vendors are the top contract winners both for IT solutions and for all types of purchased products and services. These tables also list which specific IT solutions are the biggest dollar targets within the Energy Department and how this money is spent across old and new IT systems.
