The New Nokia — Shifting Gears in Asia/Pacific
This IDC Flash discusses the learnings and key takeaways from the annual Nokia Asia/Pacific Analyst Event held on October 12–13 in Taipei, Taiwan. The event provided insights into Nokia’s strategic positioning and product portfolio in the aftermath of its significant acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent, with a specific focus on Asian markets and deployments. After the acquisition, Nokia has become one of the three largest providers of network infrastructure, equipment, and services. Key takeaways from the event included:Completion of the acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent has greatly expanded Nokia’s portfolio and has armed the company with an end-to-end portfolio spanning the fixed and mobile segments. Nokia’s Asia/Pacific business is solid, with continued leadership on mobile network infrastructure and services sales as well as major player status in fixed broadband IP switching and routing segments. Nokia is laying the groundwork for 5G, with its significant research and development (R&D) investments being further augmented by the addition of Bell Labs. Examples of new initiatives gaining traction include small cells and mobile edge computing (MEC). Nokia’s strategy for 2017 looks focused on maintaining its leadership in mobile (Long-Term Evolution [LTE], cloud, and 5G), expanding into, and building, new businesses in mission-critical and private LTE networks, building its enterprise portfolio, and differentiating with its enhanced services organization.
