LPWAN for IoT: Communications SPs Press the Button on LTE-M and NB-IoT Rollouts

This IDC Market Perspective discusses the commercial emergence and viability of cellular-based IoT networks, with an emphasis on LTE-M and NB-IoT. The LPWAN market remains in a state of flux, driven by a diverse set of connectivity approaches not fully mapped to an even deeper set of use cases. With many communications SPs only recently introducing LTE-M and/or NB-IoT alternatives, noncellular entities have made inroads by leveraging unlicensed spectrum to swiftly gain an early beachhead. However, as LPWAN becomes a strategic imperative for most communications SPs, IDC expects the global market to shift in favor of cellular IoT. The U.S. market will be a key proving ground for the cellular approach, as the Big 4 communications SPs roll out LTE-M and NB-IoT nationwide in 2018 and 2019."Confusion and competition will limit LPWAN uptake in 2018, but as LTE-M and NB-IoT are rolled out against unlicensed first movers, cellular LPWAN is set to become the predominant connectivity solution due to its perceived strengths in security, SLAs, and long-term viability," says Patrick Filkins, senior research analyst, IoT and Mobile Network Infrastructure.
