Japan SDN and NFV Vendor Trends Analysis 2017

This IDC study primarily analyzes the current performance and future outlook of the software-defined network (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) markets for datacenters, enterprise networks, and carriers' networks, as well as the trends among solution vendors, integrators, and carriers. The Japan SDN and NFV markets are undergoing significant developments. Datacenter SDN is being established as a best practice in the market, and enterprise network SDN is also seeing market rejuvenation and more definite use cases. SDN solutions first appeared in the market in 2011 and since then many vendors have continued to expand their solution offerings, although several vendors have exited the market. Vendors that have discovered best practices are showing significant growth and are gradually becoming leading vendors in their respective fields. As the SDN market approaches growth maturity, it is clear that there are different phases of operational efficiency and the level of automation required by users for datacenter SDN and enterprise network SDN. "It is necessary for datacenter SDN and enterprise network SDN vendors to prepare automated operational solutions according to the different levels of operational automation. However, it is not necessary that all solutions prepared should be SDN solutions. What is important is for vendors to come up with an incremental approach in which users can increase their automation level and for vendors to show the way to achieve operational automation from a long-term perspective," says Kenichi Kusano, group manager, Communications, IDC Japan.
