Japan Communication Service Provider Networks Market Shares, 2016: Carrier Router and Ethernet Switch
This IDC study presents an analysis of vendor shares and vendor trends relevant to the Japan communication service provider (CSP) network equipment market (which includes telecommunications carriers), for the whole market and for the router and Ethernet switch segments for 2016. The market environment for the Japan CSP network equipment market continued to be harsh in 2016 because of Long Term Evolution (LTE) service spending (which continued until 2014) having run its course, with no new spending on services to replace it. Cisco Systems managed to demonstrate strength through the breadth and of its customer base even in such a harsh market environment, taking its share of the market to roughly half. Alaxala Networks was the only vendor that managed to do well in the stagnant CSP Ethernet switch market, and succeeded in increasing its share of that market."All vendors should concentrate on network virtualization, the key to next-generation CSP networking. Vendors ranked second or lower especially should boldly take on initiatives in virtual routers and network disaggregation, fields in which they normally stand still out of concern for the damage that competitors will be able to inflict on their existing business. Vendors will be able to create new and strong competitive positions for themselves by actively engaging the current challenges in network virtualization," said Kenichi Kusano, group manager, Communications, IDC Japan.
