2016 IDC FutureScape CIO Agenda Prediction 2: IT Resources Shift from Legacy Services to Generating Digital Business Revenue
This IDC study, written for senior technology executives, explores the issues raised in the IDC FutureScape CIO Agenda Prediction 2: "New digital revenue streams — by 2018, 35% of IT resources will be spent to support the creation of new digital revenue streams." Driving this prediction is the increasingly digital nature of society and business interactions. Responding to a change of that magnitude will require coordinating resources within and outside the enterprise at the most senior level as IT investments in digital transformation are as likely to be made by functional and LOB executives as by the CIO in the form of cloud-based services, applications, and resources. IDC believes that this transition signals a fundamental change in how businesses will structure themselves, operate, and interact with their ecosystem (e.g., markets, customers). It also represents the most significant challenge and opportunity for CIOs in a generation to reinvent their role and recapture authority for consolidating and coordinating digital IT investments for the enterprise."C-level executives are making direct investments in a digital business platform that is both uncertain and growing but which represents the future of the business and draws resources away from existing products, services, and infrastructure." — Marc Strohlein and Fred Magee, adjunct analysts with IDC's Research Network. "If CIOs hope to remain relevant to future business/IT strategic plans, they must find ways to make larger investments in the skills and IT that enable digital transformation while maintaining core services: a daunting task.
