2016 IDC FutureScape CIO Agenda Prediction 1: Leading in 3D, a DX Leadership Model

This IDC study, written for CIOs, senior IT executives, and other technology executives, discusses the IDC FutureScape CIO Agenda Prediction 1: Through 2018, two-thirds of CIOs will have embraced Leading in 3D, which requires them to simultaneously innovate, integrate, and incorporate. This prediction underscores that IT leadership will be required, as never before, to oversee a continuous change process, fueled by the Digital Transformation (DX) of enterprises, which links business and IT innovation to operations through a consistent and well-governed transitional environment. IDC terms this new paradigm Leading in 3D. It is a leadership model for DX. It requires abandoning 2D thinking that treats the management of innovation and operations as separate, unlinked, and unique practices. IDC believes that the business of the future will be continuously responding and adapting its products/services to changes in its digital ecosystem. The successful CIO will be the one who manages to serve the transitional nature of the enterprise. "The 3rd Platform, which powers digital transformation, requires that CIOs and technology executives innovate, integrate, and incorporate at the same time. Anything less is kicking the can down the road," says Serge Findling, vice president of research with IDC's IT Executive Program (IEP).
