Evolving Role of the IoT Edge Network Gateway
This IDC Market Perspective discusses the evolving role and functionality of IoT edge network gateways. IoT edge network spend is expected to grow at a CAGR of 30.2% from 2016 to 2021 to reach $2.1 billion. Forming a significant portion of this spend will be investment in IoT edge network gateways. At a minimum, IoT edge network gateways will convert PAN and LAN protocols for further distribution to a WAN and IT environment. However, as the broad range of IoT applications will demand different capabilities from IoT edge infrastructure, the IoT edge network gateway will evolve to play a larger role, often embedding higher-order intelligence and processing capabilities to address specific demands around latency, security, and data."What enterprises expect from their IoT network infrastructure will be heavily mapped to specific industry vertical requirements. As such, IoT edge network gateways are evolving to host additional functionality such as security, data, and/or device management," says Patrick Filkins, senior research analyst, IoT and Mobile Network Infrastructure.
