DHL's Innovation Strategy Includes Betting Big on Robots to "Sense the Future"
This IDC Perspective provides insight into the recent DHL Robotics Day held at the DHL Innovation Center in Troisdorf, Germany, in mid-November 2018. Smart, connected, collaborative, and mobile robots are quickly becoming a technology investment area for many organizations as they seek to improve operations and reduce risk. DHL is no exception and is looking to establish itself as a leader in terms of 3PL, distribution, and logistics services relative to its utilization of modern technologies, including robotics. The company has rapidly expanded its use of robotics. In only six months, it has gone from its first operational deployment of robots within its network to over 290 deployments throughout its network. There are no signs of this slowing as DHL has committed to invest $300 million to deploy emerging technologies to 350 of its 430 North American sites. "DHL has been very vocal about its efforts to use robots to deliver better services for its customers," says John Santagate, research director for Commercial Service Robotics at IDC. "This company has recognized the benefit potential of robotics and is aggressively working to position itself as a leader in innovation while delivering improved outcomes and services for its customers."
