This IDC Health Insights report examines best practices in the use of industry clouds in the life science industry. With the industry's heightened focus on core competencies, several opportunities for industry- and vendor-based clouds have emerged with support from ongoing efforts to externalize remaining noncore competencies and embrace cross-industry collaboration. Precompetitive collaborative R&D has taken the lead in the use of industry clouds, with information-driven clouds within industry consortia as a well-accepted approach to adoption.
"While collaboration has always been a core element within the life science R&D space, growth of new data resources (e.g., EMR and other patient- and disease-centric data) and the need to work more efficiently and effectively have driven industry leaders to expand collaborative efforts across company boundaries. While most core efforts remain tightly held within corporate boundaries, other supporting efforts are increasingly being shared pre-competitively. As the industry continues its expansion beyond traditional boundaries (e.g., into the healthcare provider and payer ecosystems and engaging patients directly), industry clouds will be there to help facilitate and empower collaboration," says Dr. Alan S. Louie, research director, IDC Health Insights.
