Augmented Reality Moves One Step Closer to Mainstream: Apple Puts Both Its Technology and Weight Behind AR
This IDC Market Note provides an analysis and IDC point of view on the announcements from Apple for augmented reality technologies at the recently concluded Worldwide Developers Conference 2018. The announcements include the update to Apple's ARKit SDK, a new file format for AR, and other updates on partnerships and applications. It is early days for AR technologies, and there are several bottlenecks, such as the lack of optimized hardware, content creation tools, and even compelling use cases and applications. Apple appears to be tackling all these problems with its product updates that are detailed in this document as well as its ecosystem partnerships. IDC believes that these announcements will help drive the adoption of AR and bring it closer to mainstream. However, Apple will need to move fast, especially in China, where Android OEMs (such as Huawei, OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi), Google (with ARCore available on Xiaomi's Mi Mix 2S and more smartphones eventually), and other internet players, such as Tencent (with AR-based games and apps), are going much more aggressively to create AR-based apps and ecosystem.
