Solar Panel Manufacturing in the US
The Solar Panel Manufacturing industry, which manufactures solar panels and solar cells, has large fluctuations over the five years to 2018. The industry has been plagued with high competition from low-cost Asian manufacturers, which have flooded the market with low priced solar panels and cells during the five-year period. Additionally, declining prices of natural gas and steaming coal have lowered the cost of other forms of energy and shifted demand away from solar energy. High import competition has been the primary threat to the industry during the five-year period. Over the five years to 2023, the industry is expected to benefit from high demand for solar panels. This rise in demand is a result of government programs, as well as an increase in the number of states with renewable portfolio standards. However, rising imports are expected to take up a significant percentage of the newly generated demand.
Operators in this industry manufacture solar panels and solar cells and supply these products to solar panel installers and downstream residential, commercial and utility customers. This industry does not include solar cells or solar panels manufactured abroad by US companies.
