Outdoor Furniture Manufacturing
The Outdoor Furniture Manufacturing industry produces furniture for outdoor settings, such as backyards, patios, decks and swimming pools. Since households purchase the majority of outdoor furniture, demand rises with improved disposable income and greater housing starts. However, although US demand for outdoor furniture has risen steadily, industry manufacturers have had a diminished role in supplying it due to intense import competition, leading to only modest revenue growth over the five years to 2019. Outdoor furniture is less expensive to manufacture abroad, especially in countries such as China, where a majority of imports originate. Foreign manufacturers can then pass these cost savings to customers in the form of lower prices, widening their appeal to budget-conscious consumers. Prospects for industry growth will continue to be limited over the five years to 2024. Although growth in imports' share of domestic demand is expected to slow, a simultaneous slowdown to historic norms in the housing market will also curb demand growth. As more domestic manufacturers find it difficult to compete with imports for a slowing market, an increasing number of operators will continue to exit the industry by shutting down their factories or relocating abroad.
This industry manufactures outdoor furniture, such as lawn and patio chairs, picnic tables and patio umbrellas. Outdoor furniture can be made of various materials, including metal, wood and plastic.
