The industry is best divided into for-profit and nonprofit entities. Nonprofit entities have mostly charitable aims and serve low-income communities, while for-profit industry operators tend to provide high-quality used items at more attractive prices than department stores. Revenue in this industry has historically followed countercyclical patterns, rising during periods of poor macroeconomic performance and declining during periods of economic growth. For this reason, revenue growth was stronger in some of the years leading up to the reporting period due to a higher unemployment rate, as many cash-strapped consumers opted to purchase used goods.
