Cattle & Hog Wholesaling in the US
The Cattle and Hog Wholesaling industry operates between the upstream animal production and downstream animal processing industries. Industry operators purchase cattle and hogs from upstream livestock producers, the cost of which is primarily influenced by feed prices. Industry performance is largely driven by fluctuations in the price of red meat, which has declined over the five years to 2019, and per capita meat consumption which has increased during the same five-year period. However, rising per capita meat consumption is not expected to significantly boost industry revenue growth. Overall, this industry is struggling in line with the declining Wholesale Trade sector (IBISWorld report 42) at large. Increasing consolidation among downstream meat processors and upstream livestock producers has exacerbated this trend. Not only have lower red meat prices hindered industry revenue growth, but as more companies at the production and processing level vertically integrate to carry out their own wholesale functions, industry revenue is expected to decline further. Over the five years to 2024, the Cattle and Hog Wholesaling industry is expected to continue declining. Further projected declines in the price of red meat and per capita meat consumption demonstrate that demand for industry products will be largely satiated, suggesting that the industry will have adjusted to the structural changes that have been occurring over the past five years.
Establishments in this industry primarily wholesale livestock. Cattle, swine, sheep and goats are included, but horses and mules are excluded. Wholesalers may purchase livestock from feedlots, breeders or other ranchers and then sell to slaughterhouses, other feedlots and breeders and livestock buyers.
