The Book Stores industry in Canada has declined over the five years to 2019 amid high levels of external competition from online retailers and e-books, which offer alternative and more affordable channels through which consumers are able to purchase industry goods. Although an increase in per capita disposable income has boosted total retail sales in recent years, the industry is nonetheless contracting instead of expanding. The percentage of physical and digital books sold through online channels has risen steadily, and over half of all books purchased domestically are now bought online, with industry revenue declining as a result. Over the five years to 2024, the industry is forecast to continue declining. Despite rising per capita disposable income and consumer confidence in the strengthening Canadian economy, changing consumer shopping preferences and limited leisure time for activities such as reading will lead to further drops in revenue.
Companies in this industry retail a broad range of book and newspaper merchandise, including trade books, textbooks, magazines, mass market paperbacks and religious books. These goods are purchased from domestic, and in some cases international, manufacturers and wholesalers. Operators then retail these goods through their stores to the general public. This industry excludes retailers that operate primarily as used merchandise stores or electronic shopping and mail-order houses.
