The E-Book Publishing industry has declined sharply over the five years to 2019. Prior to the current period, e-book sales surged with the introduction of new mobile devices. However, industry-relevant revenue has dropped over the past five years as e-book sales have matured as a product category. Additionally, there are signs that consumers may be tiring of digital media texts and they many continue to consume printed material either alone or in tandem with e-books when seeking longer-form book content. Over the five years to 2024, the industry is expected to stabilize somewhat. Following the large declines in sales prompted by price hikes in recent years, e-books are expected to hold steady in many genre categories. However, the industry will contend with several challenges, including the rise of self-publishing, which exists outside of the E-Book Publishing industry and offers authors an alternative to working with established publishers.
Companies in the E-Book Publishing industry design books that are already in print for a digital format, and discover, edit and design books that are published exclusively in digital formats. The industry does not include authors who self-publish; for information on this see the Performers and Creative Artists industry report (IBISWorld report 71151).
