Battery Manufacturing in the US
The products of the Battery Manufacturing industry are used in nearly every US household and in everything from cars, motorcycles and lawn mowers to cell phones. Over the five years to 2018, rising per capita disposable income and increased exports have benefited the industry, while a sizable drop in demand from car and automotive manufacturers harmed demand for industry products. Rising pressure from low-cost imports has also constrained growth during the period. Over the five years to 2023, rising environmental concerns and gasoline prices will push demand for hybrid-electric vehicles that use batteries. Meanwhile, the expected depreciation of the US dollar is expected to further bolster export growth. However, rising prices of key inputs such as lead will lead to increased purchase costs.
This industry manufactures storage and primary batteries. Storage batteries are also known as secondary or rechargeable batteries; primary batteries are nonrechargeable. Industry products have a variety of uses in cell phones, medical equipment, households and the automotive and transport sectors.
