Acetoxy Cure Silicone is a type of room-temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone sealant that cures by reacting with moisture in the air and releases acetic acid (vinegar-like odor) as a by-product during the crosslinking process. It is typically based on acetoxy-functional silane crosslinkers (such as methyltriacetoxysilane) combined with hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymers, fillers (e.g., silica or calcium carbonate), catalysts, and additives. When exposed to ambient humidity, the acetoxy groups hydrolyze and condense to form a flexible, durable silicone elastomer with excellent adhesion to glass, ceramics, aluminum, and non-porous surfaces, which is why acetoxy silicones are widely used in construction glazing, bathroom sealants, aquariums, automotive gaskets, and electronics encapsulation. The supply chain begins with upstream silicon metal and methyl chloride, which are converted into chlorosilanes via the Müller-Rochow process, followed by hydrolysis and polymerization to produce silicone intermediates such as PDMS base polymers and acetoxy silane crosslinkers. Midstream chemical companies formulate these intermediates into RTV acetoxy silicone sealants by blending polymers, curing agents, fillers, and additives, while downstream distributors and construction material companies supply the final products to building construction, automotive assembly, glass fabrication, appliance manufacturing, and DIY consumer markets.
