New Zealand Power Market Outlook to 2030, Update 2018 - Market Trends, Regulations, and Competitive Landscape

Summary

New Zealand’s export-oriented economy has been growing steadily between 2000 and 2017 except for the years 2008 and 2009 when the global economic crisis affected all the interconnected economies.During this time, power consumption grew at a CAGR of only 0.9%. Part of this low growth was the result of declining volumes in manufacturing industry, which contributes majorly to New Zealand’s power consumption, and partly due to declining residential consumption caused by increasing power bills.

The government is focusing on increasing the share of clean energy sources in New Zealand’s power mix. At present, the target is to generate 100% of the country’s electricity from clean sources by 2035. Hydropower is already a dominant source of electricity in the country and, in general, contributes to a little more than half of its total generation annually. The government’s areas of focus now are geothermal and wind, since most of the country’s utilizable hydropower resources have already been developed.

Annual power generation in New Zealand increased from 38 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2000, at a CAGR of just 0.8%. Annual power consumption in the country also increased to 40.6 TWh in 2017, at a minimal CAGR of 0.9%.Demand for power has not been strong due to declining industrial uptake and residential demand. A low growth rate in power consumption is projected from 2018 until 2030 (a CAGR of 1.5%). This presents a challenge to the strong growth of the power sector of New Zealand.
