  • Scope
    • As of March 1, 2017, Chinese city Shanghai operates a city-wide ban on smoking in indoor public places. This is an extension of a 2010 regulation which restricted public smoking e.g. in schools and libraries.
    • In preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games, Japan is seeking to restrict tobacco smoking in restaurants and other public places, including schools, universities, hospitals and government offices.
    • In the US, total cigarette consumption grew to 19,364 million pieces in January 2017, up on 18,183 million pieces in December 2016 and 19,011 in January 2016. This represents an increase of 6.5% and 1.9% respectively.
    • BAT has announced that it might close its South African cigarette plant if the country's ban on branded tobacco packaging is made effective.
