Summary

The global LNG regasification industry is expected to increase by 40% during the outlook period 2018-2022. Asia and Europe lead globally with the highest planned regasification capacity additions and capex on the new build projects over the next four years. Asia and Europe is expected to contribute more than 65% of the total global capacity growth and about 75% of proposed capex on new build terminals. Among the regions, Asia alone is expected to add more than 12 tcf of regasification capacity, followed by Europe with 3 tcf of capacity.

Key Highlights included in this report -

  • Global liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification capacity is expected grow by over 39% during the 2018-2022 period, from over 45 trillion cubic feet (tcf) in 2018 to more than 64 tcf in 2022.
  • A total of 33 new regasification terminals were announced, six terminals were stalled, and nine terminals were canceled since the previous report was published in June 2017.
  • Among regions, Asia and Europe lead in terms of both planned and announced regasification capacity additions and capital expenditure (capex) spending. These two regions together contribute to more than 65% of the global regasification capacity growth and about 75% of the global capex spending during the outlook period.
  • Asia is expected to contribute about 12.6 tcf of the global regasification capacity through 65 projects, followed by Europe with 2.8 tcf of planned capacity additions through 15 projects.
  • Among countries, India and China lead in terms of planned regasification capacity additions with about 5.1 tcf and 2.5 tcf, respectively.
  • In terms of capex for LNG regasification projects during the outlook period 2018-2022, Asia and Europe again lead with proposed capex of more than US$39 billion and about US$7.4 billion, respectively.
  • Globally, China, with proposed capex of about US$15.5 billion, leads in terms of the highest capex spending countries, followed by India, with more than US$6 billion and Bangladesh with about US$3.7 billion.
  • In terms of capacity additions among companies, Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corp (Petrobangla) and Kuwait Petroleum Corporation are slate to lead globally with about capacities of 1.1 tcf each by 2022. Shandong Hanas New Energy Co. Ltd follows with around 630 billion cubic feet (bcf).
  • Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, Shandong Hanas New Energy Co. Ltd, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation lead in terms of capex on planned regasification projects in the outlook period, with values of around US$3 billion, US$2.6 billion, and US$2.4 billion, respectively.
  • Al-Zour in Kuwait is the largest planned terminal globally in the outlook period with capacity of more than 1 tcf, followed by Yanam in India with capacity of around 530 bcf and Krishnapatnam Floating II in India with capacity of over 480 bcf.
  • Al-Zour in Kuwait also has the highest capex spending among the global LNG regasification terminals. Al-Zour has capex of around US$3 billion, followed by Hebei and Nansha in China with capex of about US$2.5 billion each.
