Russia’s economy has shown growth despite the collapse of oil prices, as the country’s GDP per capita grew at a CAGR of 7.2% during 2011-2016. Foodservice has benefited from this growth, with consumers turning to the channel more often. Russia is an extremely unequal country. Major cities have a greater variety and larger number of foodservice outlets to target more affluent urban dwellers. QSR, Workplace, and Travel are the largest channels in terms of sales, accounting for a 29%, 20% and 17% sales value share, respectively. Workplace is a fairly common channel in Russia’s foodservice, with employers organizing affordable meal solutions for their employees, catering at least for breakfast and lunch occasions.
QSR is the biggest channel in terms of transactions, accounting for 28.6% of the total profit sector sales in 2015. Over 2015-2020 the number of transactions will grow at a CAGR of 2.1%, which is lower than sales growth over the same period, at a CAGR of 3.0%, reflecting how the average value of transactions will grow.
Value growth in FSR is set to expand at a CAGR of 2.0% over 2015-2020, which is an increase from a CAGR of 1.5% over 2013-2015. The channel will reach a value of RUB 78.7 Billion in 2020 from RUB 69.0 bilion in 2013. Growth of transactions at a CAGR of 0.9% over 2015-2020 will be faster than growth in the number of the outlets, at a CAGR of 0.5% over the same period. This reflects a rate of saturation in more affluent areas such as big metropolitan areas, as well as move towards more efficient and casual formats.
Currently, Coffee & Tea Shops are a fairly small channel in Russia, accounting for a 2.5% sales share in Russia’s profit sector foodservice. The channel has witnessed a strong growth during 2013-2015 at a CAGR of 3.0%, and is forecast to show a faster growth over 2015-2020 at a CAGR of 3.7%.
