Still wine was the largest category with value sales of US$80,883.1 million in 2017, accounting for 89.5% of the overall value sales in the region. The top five brands in the Asia-Pacific wine sector accounted for 31.2% of the overall brand value share, where the leading player Changyu accounted for 13.2% of the overall value sales in 2017. Private labels held a value share of 0.5% in the overall Asia-Pacific wine sector. The low share of private labels indicates Asia-Pacific consumers’ inclination towards branded wines. More specifically, there is a significant demand for high-quality imported wines.
China is forecast to register the highest value growth among the high-potential countries in the Asia-Pacific region with 16.1% CAGR during 2017-2022. In terms of volume, China is again forecast to lead growth with a CAGR of 9.2% during the same period. Hypermarkets & supermarkets were the largest distribution channels in the Asia-Pacific wine sector, accounting for 27.1% of overall volume sales respectively, in 2017. On-trade sales in the region accounted for 42.9% of the wine sector during the same year. Glass was the most commonly used package material in the Asia-Pacific wine sector with a share of 91.2% of unit sales in 2017, while bottle was the most popular pack type, accounting for a 98.6% share in the same year.
