Indonesia Coal Mining to 2025 - Updated with Impact of COVID-19

Summary

GlobalData's Indonesia Coal Mining to 2025 - Updated with Impact of COVID-19 provides a comprehensive coverage on Indonesia’s coal mining industry with historical and forecast data on the country’s coal production, consumption, and exports. The report also provides detail for coal reserves by country. The trade section briefs about Indonesia’s major coal export partners. An extensive demand drivers section provides information on factors that are affecting the country’s coal demand, which primarily driven by the power industry and demand from the key exports partner countries such as China and India. It further includes profiles of Indonesia’s largest coal producers, information on the major active, planned and exploration projects. The report also includes the regulatory framework of the country such as major regulatory bodies, laws, mining rights and taxes.

By producing 535Mt of coal, Indonesia stood as the world’s fourth-largest coal producer in 2020. The production fell by 13% in 2020 over 2019, mainly due to the impact of COVID-19, which subdued coal demand both from domestic and exports markets. This has led the companies to reduce their guidance for the year. PT Bumi Resources Tbk, PT Adaro Energy Tbk and PT Bukit Asam (Persero) Tbk are the top three coal producers in the country, which together produced 169.3Mt of coal in 2020. The domestic coal consumption is mainly driven by demand from the power industry, which accounts for 91% of the total consumption. The consumption from the power industry fell by an estimated 21.7% to 68Mt in 2020, over the previous year. In terms of exports, the country is benefited from its strategic location and price advantage for its low-quality thermal coal to the major importing hubs, primarily India, China and South Korea. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal governs the mining industry in Indonesia.
