Fuel Cards in Switzerland 2017: Market and competitor data and insights into the commercial fuel card sector
The Total number of service stations in Switzerland decreased by 5.7% in 2016, totaling to 3,424 service stations.Over 2,000 new fuel cards were issued in 2016, totaling to about 460,000 cards in the market. Of those cards more than 88% were held by fleet vehicles and 11% CRT vehicles.Fuel card volumes increased by 1.6% in 2016 to around 950Millionlitres, breaking the trend started in 2015.Fuel card volumes account for 14.6% of total fuel sold in Switzerland in 2016, and will continue to grow towards 2022.
Over 10,000 new fuel cards will be issued between 2017 and 2022, totaling to over 470,000 cards in the market. Of those cards more than 89% will be held by fleet vehicles and about 10% by CRT vehicles.Fuel card volumes will increase by 2.9% between 2017 and 2022 totaling 996 Millionlitres in 2022.Fuel card volumes will account for 16.8% of total fuel sold in Switzerland in 2022, as it increases annually between 2018 and 2022.
Fleet card volumes will continue to grow rising 4.8% between 2017 and 2022 to total 830m litres by the end of 2022. CRT card volumes decreased by 0.8% in 2016.after falling by 0.9% in 2015. Between 2017 and 2022 CRT card volumes will fall by 5.6%, totaling 166m litres by the end of 2022.
Top five fuel card operators made up 63.9% of fuel card volumes in 2016 as they all offer large card acceptance networks, while also offering a wide range of services such as toll payments and online monitoring. Shell remained the Swiss fuel card market leader despite losing market share in 2016, accounting for 23.1 as clients were drawn to its wide range of card services.
