Fuel Cards in Belgium 2017: Market and competitor data and insights into the commercial fuel card sector
Total number of service stations in Belgium increased by 0.4% in 2016, totaling 3,400 service stations.Over 12,000 new fuel cards were issued in 2016, totaling to 1,226,670 cards in the market. Of those cards 83% were held by fleet vehicles and 17% CRT vehicles.Fuel card volumes increased by 4.6% in 2016 to around 2.8Billionlitres, continuing the trend started in 2012.
Over 26,000 new fuel cards will be issued between 2017 and 2022, totaling to around 1.2 million cards in the market. Of those cards 85% will be held by fleet vehicles and 15% CRT vehicles.Fuel card volumes will increase by 12% between 2017 and 2022 totaling over 3.2Billionliters in 2022.Fuel card volumes will account for 45.3% of total fuel sold in Belgium in 2022, as it increases annually between 2018 and 2022.
Fleet card volumes will continue to grow rising by about 14.5% between 2017 and 2022 to total 2,261m liters by the end of 2022. CRT card volumes increased by 3.7% in 2016.after rising by 1.7% in 2015. Between 2017 and 2022 CRT card volumes will rise by 7.5%, totaling 997m litres by the end of 2022.
Top five fuel card operators made up 75% of fuel card volumes in 2016 as they all offer large card acceptance networks across Benelux, while also offering a wide range of services such as toll payments and online monitoring. “TOTAL” remained the Belgian fuel card market leader as it maintained its market share accounting for 21.6% in 2016, as clients were drawn to its large domestic service station and motorway network which covers 15.6% of the market.
