eHealth to Strengthen Delivery of Care for Non-communicable Diseases in Africa
Narrowing the Accessibility Gap through Partnerships, Growth Opportunities Created by Increased Disease Prevalence

This study aims to analyse the eHealth market in Africa and its application in the mitigation of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The major focus is on market trends (mHealth, wearables, and video telemedicine) and regional trends (Southern Africa, East Africa, West Africa, North Africa, and Indian Ocean Islands), focusing on the main competitors in each region. The major NCDs include various types of cancer, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. Mental health diseases are also noticeably growing in the continent.

Africa’s healthcare systems continue to struggle to adequately cater to the growing population, worsened by a high incidence of poverty in most parts. Low-resource communities bear the brunt of NCDs, as treatment is often costly. This then results in an increase in premature deaths as several individuals go untreated either due to lack of finances or late detection. However, as the economic growth rate is on an upward trajectory in many nations, the need for the improvement of healthcare facilities, IT systems, and infrastructure becomes more apparent. As the populations become more economically enabled, changes in lifestyle begin to be noticed. Smoking, excessive drinking, physical inactivity, and excessive salt/sodium intake are some of the negative lifestyle activities associated with prosperous and prospering nations, and NCDs. Also, the disease burden continues to increase for both communicable and non-communicable diseases, requiring new technology to manage populations. This study looks at the market leaders in each African region and how East Africa is leading the revolution as well as Southern Africa, with a focus on mHealth, wearables, and video telemedicine. These regions are led by Kenya and South Africa, respectively. The disease categories in this study are cardiovascular, cancer, diabetes, and respiratory—the 4 largest NCD classes, responsible for over 80% of the NCD deaths around the globe. The main drivers and restraints of the market are highlighted in this study along with cross-country healthcare and IT trends. It proposes the growth opportunities available for companies and other eHealth stakeholders in implementing and improving eHealth in Africa as well as future perspectives.
