Innovations in Portable Renewable Energy and Its Impact on Key Sectors-Technical Insights

Portable renewable power systems are stand-alone portable devices (not connected to the electricity grid), which use renewable energy to power everyday residential, commercial or industrial applications. Solar, wind, and biomass are the most common sources of renewable energy powering these devices.

The main aim of this technology is to replace diesel and gas generators that degrade the environment, and address safety, health and energy efficiency issues.

Maximum research and development initiatives for portable renewable power are being carried out in North America and Europe due to supportive government policies.

The three main applications for portable renewable power are military, civilian (which includes consumer electronics, residential, and humanitarian efforts) and industrial.

Portable solar power has the largest market share in portable renewable power, followed by portable wind power. The market is mainly driven by thin film solar cells, specifically second generation solar cells, which refers to amorphous silicon, copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) solar cells.
