Current emission regulations, globally, do not warrant a GPF at least until 2017 when Euro 6(c) will be implemented. However, some OEMs will start integrating GPFs into their GDI vehicles even before 2017. Daimler is leading the way in GPF adoption with its 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-500 being the first passenger car to be equipped with a GPF.

Western Europe will lead in the adoption of GPF, accounting for 􂀀-􂀀% of the total GPF installation by 2020. This is primarily due to the 6x1011 particles/km regulation which will be brought into effect by Euro 6(c) norms in 2017. Prospective implementation of a 1mg/mile particulate emission regulation by the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA), closer to 2020 will increase the uptake in North America to about 􂀀– % of the total volume. Volumes in Eastern Europe will remain very limited and will account for less than 􂀀% of total GPF installations.

The Volkswagen group is expected to lead in terms of volumes, accounting for about 􂀀– % of the total volumes, followed by its German peers, Daimler and BMW, each accounting for 􂀀– %. American OEMs, Ford and GM, will account for 􂀀– % and 􂀀– % of the total GPF volume, respectively.

World over, regulations have been governing particulate emissions from diesel engines for some time now. Post 2015, there will emphasis on emission reduction from gasoline engines as well because of the increased uptake of the Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology by all Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Europe leads the way in particulate emission control. Euro 6 is the first standard to impose a particulate number regulation on GDI engines. From 2017, all vehicles should emit less than 6x10 raised to 11 particles/km. To achieve this, some vehicles will require an exhaust after-treatment system such as a Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF).
